The first ODI between Indian and Sri Lanka of India tour of Sri Lanka was played at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Sunday - 18 July 2021. Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first in the SL vs IND 1st ODI 2021.
Shikhar Dhawan became the captain for the first time for team India in his 143rd match and also becomes the 25th captain for India in ODI format. He also becomes the fifth Indian player to hit a half-century on his ODI captaincy debut.
Sri Lanka scored 262 runs for 9-wickets down in 50 overs with a top score of unbeaten 43 runs off 35 balls including one-four and 2-sixes with a strike rate of 122.86 from Chamika Karunaratne.
Skipper Dasun Shanaka scored 39 runs off 50-balls including 3-fours and a six, Charith Asalanka added 39 off 65-balls, Avishka Fernando 33 runs off 35 balls, and Minod Bhanuka 27.
Indian bowler Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Chahar, and Yuvzendra Chahal claimed 2-wickets each and Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya took one wicket each.
India chased 263 runs for 3-wickets down with a top score of incredible unbeaten 86 runs off 95 balls including 6-fours and a-six with a strike rate of 90.53 from debutant captain Shikhar Dhawan. Team India scored 91 runs during powerplay which becomes the highest score in ODI surpassing the previous record of 83 runs in 2019 against West Indies. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan has now completed 6000 ODI runs in 140 innings.
Two debutants in ODI, Surya Kumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan showed their stunning performance as Ishan Kishan blasted 59 runs off 42 balls including 8-fours and 2-sixes with a strike rate of 140.47 and Surya Kumar Yadav smashed a knock of unbeaten 31 runs off 20 balls including 5-fours with a strike rate of 155.
Ishan Kishan is also remarked as the 16th Indian player to score a half-century on the ODI debut match. He also became the first Indian player to hit a half-century on both ODI and T20I debuts. He also became the second Indian wicketkeeper to hit a fifty on his ODI debut surpassing the previous record of Saba Karim's fifty in 1997 against South Africa.
Opener Prithvi Shaw added 43 off runs off 24 balls including 9-fours and Manish Pandey added 26 runs off 40 balls including 1/1 fours/sixes.
Sri Lankan bowler Dhananjaya de Silva claimed 2-wickets for 49 runs in 5 overs and Lakshan Sandakan took one wicket for 53 runs in 8.4 overs.
Prithvi Shaw named Man of the Match for his quickfire knock of 43 runs off 24-balls including 9-fours with a strike rate of 179.16 in SL vs IND 1st ODI 2021.
