Clubs that end second to last in their national league after failing to qualify for the Champions League, are entitled to the second-tier UEFA Europa League competition.

More importantly, teams that do not meet the criteria for the UEFA Europa League will be able to sign up for a new third-tier competition named the UEFA Europa Conference League beginning in 2021.

The Champions League, in its current format, kicks off in late June with a preliminary round, three group stage rounds, and a play-off round, all of which are in two-legged ties.  The 6 teams that survive progress to the group stage, where they will compete against 26 other teams who have already been eligible. The 32 teams are divided into 8 four-team groups and compete in a double round-robin format.
